Jack Swinney:
Jack Swinney’s body of work brings to mind that of the masters of the Dutch Golden Age of the seventeenth century through his use of rich, striking colors and subject matter consisting of pastoral landscapes and contemplative characters; yet his oils on canvas and wood have a decidedly contemporary flair. Whether painting mountain scenes or solitary people, Swinney centers his work in a specific place, often locations around his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina that will be familiar to many local people. “I like to watch people, whether it’s in restaurants or walking on the street, and I encompass what I’ve seen into my work,” Swinney says.
Swinney turned his lifelong love of art into a full-time pursuit in 2000, when he had the opportunity to work with fellow Charlotte artist Andy Braitman. Since then he has worked with Elizabeth Ross and Tony Griffin of Charlotte, as well as attending workshops with Cedric and Joanette Egeli of Annapolis, Maryland, andNelson Shank of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Prior to 2000, Swinney spent most of his professional career running an industrial machine shop. While his current venture may seem like a jarring departure from the engineering world, Swinney is passionate about his art and uses painting to express his vision and communicate the wonder he sees in the world around him.
